The Mission of Master Catechists in the Life of the Diocese
Master Catechists, as extensions of the teaching office of
the Bishop, are selected and commissioned by the Bishop to:
- Provide the specific formation and courses of studies
required by the Diocese for catechists to obtain or renew their Catechist
(Level One) certification
- Provide workshops and in-services for the continued
growth and formation of catechists
- Build a core group of trained catechists to serve as
resource personnel to parishes
Qualifications of a Master Catechist
- Current Catechist certification (level One)
- Proven expertise and recent experience in the
catechetical ministry at various age levels
- Personal recommendation of the candidate’s pastor or
other qualified person
- Evidence of on-going education in: theology,
catechesis, the teaching of the Church, spiritual development in light of
Vatican II and post-Conciliar documents
- Evidence of ability to work in multi-cultural
situations
- Understanding of the purpose of he Master Catechist
and a willingness to serve as such when certified
- Ability to study at an advance level
- Excellent group facilitation skills
Standards for Certification
For certification as a Master Catechist 45 credit hours of
theological, liturgical, scriptural, and educational methodology are required.
