Although the mayor of an anonymous town in rural Georgia points out that his town and other small towns try to hide problems of alcoholism and substance abuse, one church there is now the site for Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon meetings. The church’s pastor is a recovering alcoholic. A Rochester, New York church holds Alcoholics Anonymous meetings for youth as part of an outpatient alcohol and drug abuse program. Meetings are preceded by a meal and sports activities. In Austin, Texas, the Lutheran church, through its Parkside Medical Services Corporation, has begun a citywide ecumenical ministry that includes the training of substance abuse support groups. 38) Tomorrow We March. Washington D.C.: National Conference of Catholic Bishops, 1996.
“On the anniversary of the infamous Supreme Court abortion decisions, more than 8,000 packed the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the Mass of Life. There was reason to mourn that evening. Twenty-three years of legalized abortion have taken a terrible toll, in lives lost and other lives shattered. There seemed little to cheer about. Why, then did the Basilica ring out with frequent, enthusiastic applause? Cardinal Bernard Law reminded all there present—in stirring and memorable words—of our “inescapable responsibility to be unconditionally pro-life.””

“There are 17 million refugees in the world today, and the number is growing daily due to “ethnic cleansing.” In 1994 a group of 2,000 Guatemalans reversed this trend. After 12 years of exile in Mexican refugee camps, they returned to their homeland in the Izcan jungle region of Guatemala. Their journey is not over yet: many still call the returnees “the enemy,” and the base of the feared Guatemalan army is only a few miles away. We join the refugees in their camps in Mexico and Guatemala. This documentary interviews the people of one town, Cuarto Pueblo, where an army massacre in 1982 forced its survivors to flee to Mexico. They tell us of that dramatic ordeal along with their fears and hopes in undertaking the journey back.”
