Campus Ministry
Campus Ministry is offered at the following locations in the Diocese of Reno: University Catholic Community, Our Lady of Wisdom Parish, University of Nevada, Reno Campus Ministry, Great Basin Community College, Elko

Campus ministry expresses the Church's provident commitment to be present to the academic community: students, faculty, and administration. Lacking any Catholic institution of higher learning within Nevada, there is a greater urgency in the Diocese of Reno for this special ministry.

Charged with proclaiming the Good News of Jesus, the Christ, as heralded and taught by the Catholic Church, campus ministry must be a prophetic voice and ever-present witness to the university as well as the wider surrounding community. Forming a faith community which celebrates and honors differing cultures, welcomes youth and adults alike, single persons and families, regardless of race, color , economic or social status, this is the great challenge and constant excitement of this ministry.

In Reno, the life of this community is sustained by the pastor, pastoral associate, an active parish pastoral council, finance council, and Respect Life, Vocations, Word and Worship, Christian Formation, and Stewardship Committees. A student-directed Newman Center Board, with representatives on the Parish Pastoral Council, provides valuable input into the religious, social and cultural needs of the students members of the Parish and assists in designing and fostering programs and projects to address these needs.

In Elko, the Ichthys Club (Catholic Campus Ministry at Great Basin College) is the only religious-based student/faculty organization approved by the student government to operate on campus. This approval gives the group a wide-range of opportunities for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ at GBC. The Ichthys Club sponsors a weekly Bible study, regular Communion Services, a speakers forum, retreats, RCIA Program, and outreach to the poor.  The group also is involved in the social life of the college and has hosted cookouts, concerts, trips, and other functions as well. The Ichthys Club is administered by an oversight board composed of prominent Catholic administrators and  faculty at Great Basin. The motto of Ichthys is simple - Hearts for the Lord and Hand for Others.

Scheduling of liturgical and social events usually follows the academic life of the university. In addition to weekend Masses, socials, faith-formation seminars and retreats, the students engaged in charitable programs in the community as witnesses to their Christian commitment. Spiritual direction and personal counseling are also available.
